Notice to MYC Members & Guests

Smoking

Due to the acknowledged hazards arising from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and the increasingly adverse public perception of smoking in the marketplace, and at the overwhelming desire of the membership, the Board of Governors, by unanimous vote in the monthly meeting held June 23, 2008, has deemed the interior spaces of the MYC clubhouse as a Smoke-Free Environment.

This policy is effective immediately, covers the smoking of any tobacco product and applies to all persons including members, visitors, employees and vendors.

Clubhouse

The clubhouse is situated at the mouth of Dog River overlooking a splendid view of Mobile Bay on the east and a forest of masts from the harbor on the west. The Club is open Thursday through Sunday with hours of operation from 11:30am - 10pm (Thurs ~ Sat) and 11:30am - 5pm (Sun).

The current clubhouse was constructed after Hurricane Frederic in 1979, and was the only yacht club standing from Mobile Bay westward after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Recent construction has included the expansion of the deck to over 10,000 sq. feet, the addition of a ramp & elevator to assist individuals, and a porte cochere, which shelters those getting in or out of vehicles.

The club has a full-time manager, Trudy Carlock. She has been with Mobile Yacht Club since 1989 and is currently serving as the President of the Gulf Yachting Association (GYA) Club Managers Association.

The clubhouse has many wonderful features for members' use, including:

  • 500' pier ~ members enjoy the privilege of having the longest pier on the bay. Powerboat members enjoy rafting up to the pier to venture into the clubhouse for a cold beverage or hot meal. Others enjoy relaxing under the pier's roofed area at its peak to view the boats, or have some fun catching the bigggg fish.

  • Swimming Pool ~ the pool is for the use by members and guests, and is a great way to beat the summer heat. Parents enjoy the view and breeze from the bay while the kids enjoy the water. The pool rules are posted at the pool.

  • Club boats ~ the club encourages recreational and competitive sailing, and maintains a fleet of one design boats, Flying Scots and Optimist dinghies, for the use by its members and guests. These boats are available to those who have demonstrated their qualifications, contact Hank Schwarz at (251) 471-3131 or e-mail accounting@mobileyachtclub.org, or contact Trudy Carlock at (251) 471-3131 or e-mail manager@mobileyachtclub.org to schedule use of a boat.

  • The Flying Scot is a day sailer boat used for pleasure sailing as well as racing throughout North America. As a one-design, all Flying Scot boats are built to the same specifications and thus have equal chances in winning a race, no matter when the boat was built. This makes the boats especially appealing to amateur racing associations since this type of construction strives to eliminate variables other than the skill of the crew. Visit www.fssa.com for additional information.

  • Twenty years ago Vanguard developed the Club 420 in response to the growing need for a more durable, high-performance, double-handed racing dinghy that could stand up to the rigors of club and collegiate programs. Ideal for crews ranging in size from 220-310 lbs., the Club 420 is manageable for sailors coming out of the Optimist class. The stable, forgiving hull is built tough with reinforced fiberglass, high impact bumpers, and a simple, untapered rig. The Club 420 is simple and safe for beginning sailors and yet quick enough to keep collegiate All-Americans interested. It provides the capability for advanced sailing techniques for international standard sailors, or accessible for beginners. Visit www.teamvanguard.com for more information.

  • The Optimist is a small, single-crew sailing dinghy. The Optimist is a pram, meaning a boat with a flat bow. It is essentially designed to be a contoured box made of glass-reinforced plastic or plywood. Although the optimist breaks many of the principles of good boat design, it still has surprisingly good handling characteristics. Mills built the boat on a commission from the local Optimist Club as a boat which a youngster could build himself. Mills claimed that it was the largest possible usable sailboat that could be built from two 4ftx8ft sheets of plywood. Visit www.usoda.org for additional information.

  • Sailing School ~ the Club is affiliated with several junior sailing programs and sailing schools. The Mobile Bay Sailing School holds three, two (2) week training sessions at the beginning of June and July. These sessions are structured for junior participants from Beginner to Advance sailing techniques. The Club has also sponsors the University of South Alabama Sailing Team and is working with local high schools in developing sailing programs. Contact the Bill Haffner at (251) 421-2033 or e-mail wchx@wchxrail.com, or Hank Schwarz at (251) 471-3131 or e-mail accounting@mobileyachtclub.org for additional information.

  • Special Events ~ routinely the Club hosts functions for entertainment.

  • Members and guests can enjoy the sound of live music (Blues Night) from the deck or inside. Dancing is always enjoyed by all ages. It's a great way to beat the crowds and have a relaxing evening.

  • The house and restaurant facility are available to members and to the guests of members for private parties and other special events. The Club Manager has years of experience in catering such events, and makes each party an unique experience. Arrangements should be made with Trudy Carlock.

  • The Club is much more than a yachting organization, we are truly a community. Throughout the year the membership will have social events for all to enjoy, such as guest speakers. We recommend checking the calendar for these events.

  • Playground ~ this "Rainbow Play System" is the cadillac of play units, it features several swings, slide, rope ladder, and even a rock wall. Warning: kids have been known to get very upset when leaving the playground!

  • Lounge ~ our area opposite the dining room and bar features all the comforts of home; a plush couch, toy chest for the kids and a 52" flat screen TV. Let our remote control be your remote away from home! TV not your thing? Then our game table is set and ready for the next checkers or chess match.

Bar and Galley

The bar and galley is open Thursday through Sunday during Club hours of operation. Our full-time gourmet chef, Sherry Barker, serves a variety of daily and weekly lunch and dinner specials, including the famous all-you-can-eat Sunday buffet. With recent equipment purchases, the kitchen has the ability to make a snack for one, or create a fine dining experience for 100.

As a reminder, Chef Sherry can provide a to-go snack or sandwich. Advance orders can be placed by calling (251) 473-1860 or (251) 471-3131.

In addition to the kitchen, our bar stocks some of the finest wines and beverages available. Whether it's by the bottle, or glass, we're sure to have the drink to quench your thirst.

Harbor

Located west of the clubhouse in a protected bayou off Dog River, the harbor offers a well protected anchorage for 140 boats of varying sizes. The harbor has been dredged to a depth of 8 feet at low tide. City water and 110 volt electrical power are available. Transient slips are furnished on a space available basis. Our slips are regularly filled at 90% capacity. The Club has an agreement with Sundowner Marina (next door) to share the pump-out station located on the north side of the main channel.

Temporary berthing privileges are available (no charge for the first night) to visiting members of yacht clubs with which MYC has a reciprocal agreement. Contact the Harbor Master, Hank Schwarz, at (251) 471-3131 or e-mail accounting@mobileyachtclub.org to make arrangements.

The harbor has ample space for dry boat storage. Members have an option to use the 2-ton hoist or ramp for launching boats. The ramp is located on the north side of the clubhouse.
